Manually processing credit cards with Lightspeed Payments

With Lightspeed Payments, you can manually enter a customer's credit card information during a sale if need be. This can be useful if taking an order over the phone or if a customer's card has been damaged and cannot be read.

Please note that processing a credit card manually offers less protection against chargebacks and incurs higher fees than processing a card normally. It is recommended to use manual entry only when necessary.

Manually processing cards on the terminal

  • The procedure for manually entering card information can vary depending on which Lightspeed Payments terminal you are using.  For the Verifone MX915, Ingenico iPP320, and Ingenico iSMP4, the card information will be entered directly into the payment terminal.

    To begin:

    1. Initiate a sale.
    2. Click Payment.
    3. Click Credit/Debit.
    4. By default, the Enter Charge Amount field is set to the remaining balance of the sale. Optionally, modify the amount in the field.
    5. Click Manual Entry.
    6. Select Terminal in the Make a Manual Payment From drop-down menu.
    7. Use the Select a Terminal drop-down menu to select which terminal to use.
    8. Click Start Payment.
    9. Enter the credit card number on the terminal and press the enter button.
    10. Enter the credit card's expiry date on the terminal and press the enter button.
    11. When the payment amount appears on the screen, you can:
      • confirm the amount.
      • cancel the payment.
    12. Enter the zip code associated with the credit card account and press the enter button.
    13. If your terminal supports it, have your customer sign on the terminal screen and tap the on-screen Done button.
    14. The terminal returns to the idle screen once the payment is successful. Complete the sale in Lightspeed.

    The transaction is now complete.

  • The procedure for manually entering card information can vary depending on which Lightspeed Payments terminal you are using.

    For the Verifone MX915, Ingenico iPP320, and Ingenico iSMP4, the card information will be entered directly into the payment terminal.

    To begin:

    1. Initiate a sale.
    2. Tap More Payments Credit Card.
    3. Tap Manual in the upper right-hand corner of the screen.
    4. On the terminal, enter the credit card number and press the enter button.
    5. Enter the credit card's expiry date and press the enter button.
    6. When the payment amount appears on the screen, you can:
      • confirm the amount.
      • cancel the payment.
    7. Enter the zip code associated with the credit card account and press the enter button.
    8. If your terminal supports it, have your customer sign on the terminal screen and tap the on-screen Done button.
    9. The terminal returns to the idle screen and Lightspeed will show that the payment is successful. Tap Done.

    If you select the quick payment Card option from the sales screen, the Manual option will not appear on the payment screen and the terminal will immediately proceed with a standard card payment. If you cancel the transaction from the terminal, the Manual option will become available in Lightspeed.

Manually processing cards without the terminal

  • For the Verifone P400+, Wisepad 3, and Wise POS E the card information will be entered directly into the Lightspeed Retail interface when making the sale. 

    To begin:

    1. Initiate a sale.
    2. Click Payment.
    3. Click Credit/Debit.
    4. By default, the Enter Charge Amount field is set to the remaining balance of the sale. Optionally, modify the amount in the field.
    5. Click Manual Entry.
    6. Enter the Name on Card and the Postal Code/Zip for the cardholder.

    7. Click Enter Card Details.
    8. Enter the Card number, the Expiry date, and the CVC.

    9. Click Start Payment.
    10. If the customer's card has the requisite funds, you will see a Payment Approved notification. Click Back to Sale.

    You will then be returned to the usual sale screen and the approved payment will be displayed in the payment screen.

    You can then click Finish Sale to complete the transaction.

  • For the Verifone P400+, Wisepad 3, and Wise POS E and Mobile Tap the card information will be entered directly into the Lightspeed Retail interface when making the sale.

    To begin:

    1. Initiate a sale.
    2. Tap More Payments Credit Card.
    3. Tap Manual Entry.
    4. Enter the Amount, the Name on card, and the cardholder's ZIP code.

    6. Enter the Card number, the card's Expiry date, and the CVC.

    7. Tap Take Payment.

    If the payment is approved, you'll see a brief confirmation and then return to the sale. Tap Finish Sale to complete the transaction.
