Inserting a label roll

Label rolls are purchased separately from your label printer.

To insert a label roll:

  1. Pull the yellow latches on both sides of the printer towards you and lift the lid open.
  2. Pull the yellow roll guides apart and insert the label roll with the labels facing upwards.
  3. Release the roll guides and push them together. Make sure the label roll is secure and turning freely.

  4. Pull the labels out past the cutter at the front of the printer.
  5. Push the labels under the roll guides.

If you're setting up the Zebra ZD421 label printer on your computer, make sure the yellow roll guides for your labels are not squeezing your label roll too tightly or your labels will not feed properly and risk getting damaged when you print.

Connecting your label printer

  • Connecting your label printer to Lightspeed Hub on desktop

Lightspeed Hub is a desktop application that helps you to set up your hardware in fewer steps and guides you through the process. It also connects directly to Lightspeed Retail POS, bringing you a reliable hardware connection throughout your business day. To set up your label printer on your computer, first install Lightspeed Hub.

    1. Zebra ZD420 and ZD421 printers must be factory reset before connecting to Hub. For other models, skip to step 2.
      1. On your Zebra ZD420 or ZD421 printer, press the Power button to turn off your printer.
      2. Press and hold the Pause and Feed buttons while also pressing the Power button to turn on your printer.
      3. Hold the Pause and Feed buttons until the status indicator is the only indicator lit. Your Zebra ZD420 or ZD421 printer is now ready to connect to Hub.

    2. On your computer, open Lightspeed Hub.
    3. Under Label printer, select Connect.

You can only connect one label printer to Hub at a time. To connect a new printer, select Forget this device to disconnect the currently connected printer.

    4. Select Search for label printer. Your printer will display in the list as Ready. If not, make sure it's connected to your computer and a power source correctly.
    5. Select Connect next to your printer. If you're not sure which one is yours, find the serial number at the bottom of the printer and match it to the one listed in Hub.

Your printer will now display as Ready in both Hub and Retail POS.

  • Pairing your label printer to your iPad

If the Zebra ZD410 or ZD411 model you have supports Bluetooth, you can pair it to your iPad and print labels from the Retail POS app.

    1. On your iPad, tap Settings > Bluetooth.
    2. In the Bluetooth panel, toggle on Bluetooth.
    3. Under OTHER DEVICES, tap your label printer. By default, its name is its serial number. You can find the serial number at the bottom of the printer.

If your label printer isn't discoverable, enable Bluetooth Discovery and Pairing Mode. To do so, press the FEED button for five seconds. The label printer's LED light will start flashing on and off every second.

Once the pairing process is complete, your label printer displays as Connected under MY DEVICES. Retail - iPad Label printer pairing.png

Calibrating your label printer

You need to calibrate your label printer for it to recognize the size of your labels and print them correctly.

  • Calibrating your label printer to Lightspeed Hub on desktop

    1. In Lightspeed Hub, select More actions > Calibrate label printer. Or, manually calibrate your label printer by holding down the Pause and Cancel buttons for two seconds, then release. You can also quickly press the Feed button (middle button) twice before printing.
    2. Your printer will measure and feed a few blank labels, indicating it's now calibrated.

  • Calibrating your label printer on iPad

To manually calibrate your label printer:

    1. Hold down the Pause and Cancel buttons for two seconds, then release. You can also quickly press the Feed button (middle button) twice before printing.
    2. Your printer will measure and feed a few blank labels, indicating it's now calibrated.

You only need to recalibrate when you insert a new label roll of a different size. Otherwise, your printer will remember the settings from the initial calibration.

Printing labels

Once your printer is set up, test print a few labels to make sure they print as expected. Testing with a smaller amount of labels avoids waste should they print misaligned.

To print a queue of three test labels:

  1. In Retail POS, navigate to Inventory > Item Search.
  2. Select an item you want to print labels for.
  3. From the Details submenu, select Add Label. This starts a label queue. Retail - Label printers - test print.png
  4. In Inventory > Print Labels, you'll see the item listed in the label queue.
  5. To the right of the item name, in the COPIES field, enter 3.
  6. To the left of the item name, select the printer icon. A print modal will open.
  7. Select the label size that matches your label roll:
    • Normal: 2.25 in x 1.25 in
    • Small: 1.25 in x 1.00 in
    • Alternative: 2.00 in x 1.00 in
    • Jewelry: 2.20 in x 0.50 in

If you're not sure of the label size, select one from the dropdown to see an illustration in the modal you can match to your label roll.

  8. Select Print. Your label printer should print three perfectly aligned labels.
