Taking deposits for special orders and layaways

  • Available to merchants using Lightspeed Payments.

When creating a special order or layaway, you can request an online deposit from a customer to help you collect partial payment upfront. The customer will receive a deposit request via email with a summary of the sale and a secure payment form to settle the request.

Requesting a deposit during a sale

  1. Create a special order or layaway.
  2. To request a deposit, click Online deposits.

  3. In the popup window:
    1. Confirm the customer's email address.
    2. (Optional) Add a note with more information or instructions.
    3. Enter a deposit amount ($).
    4. Choose to add the customer's sale, special order, and/or layaway items to the deposit request. The preview on the left will populate with your selections.

  4. Click Send deposit request. A confirmation banner will appear on the Current Sale page.

    On Special Order or Layaway tab, the Online Deposits information will be updated with the pending amount.

    At this time, you can't modify or cancel a deposit request. Requests will expire after 14 days.

The deposit request will be emailed to the customer with a link to a secure payment form where they can settle the deposit.

You will receive an email when the online payment is complete.

Applying a deposit to a sale

After the request is settled, you'll need to apply the deposit to complete the sale:

  1. Open the special order or layaway sale.
  2. Under Payment, click the pencil icon (Edit) next to Deposit.

  3. Select the deposit to be applied to the sale. Adjust the amount if needed, then click Done.

  4. Click Finish Sale.

Viewing deposit requests

  1. Navigate to the sale.
  2. If the sale has an active deposit request attached, you can view the pending amount under Online Deposits on the right. Collected amounts will also be displayed here.

Clicking the Online deposits button will start a new deposit request.
