Hi. How can we help?

Creating discount rules

With discount rules, you can create discount types that remove a percentage (%) or a fixed amount ($) from the retail price. For example, you can create a "Buy One, Get One Free" (BOGO) discount. You can also create discount rules ahead of time so that they apply to items automatically at checkout for a specific period (e.g. a monthly promotion).

The discount types that we currently support are:

  • Buy one, get one (BOGO) discount: Buy X quantity from a group of items, get Y discount on the item with the lowest price
    • E.g. "Buy 3 candles, get 1 candle free"
  • Quantity discount: Buy X quantity of from a group of items, get Y discount on all items
    • E.g. "Buy 4 bottles of wine, get $2.00 off each bottle"
  • Bulk discount: Buy X quantity of the same item, get Y discount on the item
    • E.g. "Buy 10 cans of cat food, get $2.00 off"

You can also create tiered discounts by creating multiple discount rules. For example, your first discount rule could be "Buy 2 coffees, get 25% off" and the second could be "Buy 3 coffees, get 50% off".

Limitations

Discount rules currently have the following limitations:

  • Discount rules apply only to in-store sales in Retail, not to online sales in your eCom store.
  • Discounts can't take a set amount off the total amount.
    • E.g. "Spend $100, get $10 off."
  • Discount codes and coupons are not supported through the discounts module. Instead, you will need to create a coupon item.

Creating a tiered discount rule

Creating tiered discount rules is a great way to increase the discount you give to your customers depending on how many items they purchase. To do so, you need to create a discount rule for each tier you want to offer. Retail POS automatically applies the highest discount rule that the customer qualifies for.

For example, you can offer 25% off if your customers purchase 2 cups of coffee and 50% off if they purchase 4 cups of coffee.

To create a tiered discount rule:

  1. Create your first discount rule.
  2. Select Duplicate. This will create a duplicate discount rule with the same settings as the previous rule, except for the start and end dates.

Discount Rule for 25% off 2 Coffees, with Duplicate option emphasized.

  3. Enter your Discount rule name for the second discount rule. This will appear in the sale and on the sales receipt.

Discount rule for 50% off 4 Coffees with fields filled in.

  4. Select the start date of your discount rule. This is necessary for the price rule to work. Likely, this will be the same start date as your first discount rule.
  5. Optionally, select the check box next to Set end date and choose your discount rule's end date. The rule will automatically disable at the end of the selected day. Likely, this will be the same end date as your first discount rule.
  6. Select Save Changes.

You've now created a tiered discount rule! Once the start date of your discount rules arrives, Retail POS automatically applies the highest discount rule that the customer qualifies for, while both rules are in effect.
