This article explains how to launch a new eCom store with data from an existing eCom store.
This workflow is necessary because it is not possible to link an existing standalone eCom stores to a Retail account. Similarly, follow this workflow if you are migrating from an existing Omni eCom store to a new Omni eCom store. For example, if you were previously using OnSite and you've already migrated to Retail.
- Set up your new eCom store
- Copy all relevant settings
- Export and Import Customers
- Importing your Product Information
- Copying over the design
1. Confirm your eCom site is connected and publish items to eCom
- Make sure you've installed an eCom store in Retail.
- Publish items to eCom by using the Export tool in your existing eCom store.
- Navigate to Tools > Export
- Select Add Export -> Select Products -> Export
- Publish your items to eCom. Syncing between Retail and eCom takes up to 24 hours. Complete steps 2 and 3 in the meantime, while your items sync.
2. Copy your settings from your existing eCom store to your new Retail linked eCom store
Tips
- Configure taxes first. Then, work through the remaining settings.
- Open both instances of eCom in two separate browser windows. For example, the existing eCom store in window #1 and the new eCom store in window #2.
Instructions
- Navigate to Settings
- In your existing eCom store, copy text information and paste this data into the equivalent field in the new eCom store.
- Ensure that all options are correctly toggled on or off in the new Retail eCom store.
- Some settings are nested and require that you drill into sub-settings (anything highlighted blue). For example, within Shipping Methods - you may need to open each individual Shipping method to then update the rates subsections.
- Skip the following Settings as they come from the backend or Retail:
Account, Users, Billing, Subscription, and Activity Log - Some Payment Processing information can be copied over. If you are using Lightspeed Payments you must submit a request to enable Payments on your new eCom account. Find instructions in this Help Center article.
3. Export and Import your Customers
Tips
- You must notify your customers to reset their passwords. Learn more in this article from the Help Center.
- Export and import Customers by following the instructions in this article from the Help Center.
Instructions
- Export Customers:
- In the existing eCom store, navigate to Tools > Export.
- Chose New export -> Customers.
- Download the export.
- Import Customers:
- In your new Retail eCom, navigate to Tools -> Imports
- New Imports -> Import Customers.
- Skip the Internal ID field
4. Importing your Product Information
Tips
- A note on Product images - If the images exist in Retail you do not need to input them in eCom. If the images are imported into eCom and then into Retail, the images will be duplicated.
- Notes for migrating OnSite eCom stores to Retail eCom stores:
- Not all Product fields can be imported into Lightspeed eCom. Only the web fields from the Product card can be imported.
- For further instructions on how to manage the other various Product fields such as variant images, filters and specification please see the following section: migrating product information

- If the product images have not been migrated into Retail - open a copy of the original product export information in an excel spreadsheet. Remove the duplicates of Matrix variants and import the images in Retail eCom.
-
Import categories
Navigate to the Products > Categories. Set the visibility of categories and create new ones as required.
5. Copying over the Design
The theme determines the look of the website. This is a great opportunity to decide if you would like to keep your previous theme and design or go with a new look.
It is sometimes easier to do the Featured Products, Featured Categories and Headlines before doing the theme editor as it is easier to visualize the changes made with the editor once these are done.
5.a. Theme Editor
- Check that the new Retail eCom has the same Theme. You may need to purchase the theme from the Theme Store.
- Confirm you are not using Custom Theme Code (if the theme is called "Copy of..." this is usually indicative of custom code. The eCom support team can help you transfer the custom theme)
- Open the Theme Editor -> Advanced -> Custom CSS to see if there is any content. Copy and paste the Custom CSS.
- Select Edit Theme and navigate through each subsection (do not forget the drop downs at the top for Header/Footer/Visual/Advanced and the tabs of General and Pages) copy the settings and content from the existing eCom store.
- Remember to select the Publish button as you go to review the changes made
5.b. Headlines
- In the existing eCom store - select the Blue highlighted Headline title to view the Headline contents
- In the new Retail eCom - Select Add Headline and copy the title and Language.
- Save and select the type and link information
- To add the image - Select the Image in the existing eCom store and select Download
- Save the image from the new tab
- In the new Retail eCom store - select the saved image and save
5.c. Featured Products and Featured Categories
- In the new Retail eCom store - From the top right-hand corner select Add Product/Add Category
- Add products/Categories in Order from the bottom of the list on the existing eCom store upwards to keep the same Order
- You can keep the select window open and search and add to the list until you are finished
- For Featured Categories follow the same steps as Headlines to add the images.
