This guide is for merchants who have not previously enabled gift cards in their eCom (E-Series) store. If you already offer gift cards in your eCom store, you will not be able to sync them to Retail POS and must continue to manage them in your eCom back office.
Non-integrated gift cards purchased online can only be used for online purchases and gift cards purchased in store can only be used for in store purchases.
Setting up gift cards offers your customers more gift-giving options and increased flexibility while shopping in your physical and online stores. With Retail POS and eCom (E-Series), you can sync gift cards to manage them in one central location.
Setting up and syncing gift cards in Retail POS (R-Series)
Gift cards synced to eCom are set up and managed in Retail POS.
- In Retail POS, navigate to Customers > Gift cards.
- Click Gift card settings.
- In the Sales channel section, click the checkboxes for eCom to sell and redeem gift cards online.
- If you wish to add common amounts for customers to choose when buying a gift card, click the toggle on for Amounts and enter the amounts. You can also add a minimum and maximum amount for customers to choose a custom amount.
- Click Save.
Once your gift card sync is established, gift cards are managed in Retail POS, with some customization options available in eCom.
Customizing gift cards
You can make some gift card customizations to ensure a personalized experience for your customers, including custom images, name, description and translations, and custom ribbon.
In addition, your customers can personalize the gift card at checkout with the recipient’s name and email address, the sender’s name, and an optional message.
Adding a custom image
You can add a custom image that will show as the image for your gift card product in your eCom store, increasing your brand visibility. Before you add a custom image to your library, ensure your image fits the following specifications:
- File size: 1MB maximum for each image.
- File format: JPG, PNG, or JPEG.
- Aspect ratio: Exact dimensions for images are 714 x 516 px, although a ratio of 4:3 will usually display correctly.
To add a custom image to your library:
- In Retail POS, navigate to Customers > Gift Cards.
- Click Gift card settings.
- Scroll to the Gift card design section.
- Drag and drop an image or click Select custom design to browse from your computer to add an image. It will automatically be shown in the default first position.
Only the first default image will sync to eCom, regardless of how many images are in the library. To make one of the stock images your default, click the hide icon on all the other images so only the one you want to be default remains in the Shown designs section.
- Click Save.
Personalizing the name, description, and ribbon
In your eCom back office, you can change the name, description and translations, and ribbon for your gift card product. These settings will not sync back to Retail POS and are only for online gift card sales.
In your eCom back office, navigate to Catalog > Gift cards and click Customize Gift Cards.
On this page you can change the name, description, and translations for your gift card product, as well as update the SKU and ribbon if required.
Although gift card amounts are managed through Retail POS, you can set one of the amounts to be a default in eCom by clicking Set as default when hovering over an amount. The default amount will be suggested to your customers first, but they can still select from the other amounts you have set.
Purchasing and redeeming gift cards online
Once you've configured your settings and customization options, your customers can purchase gift cards from your online store just as they would a regular product. During checkout they can choose the amount for the gift card by selecting a preset amount or entering in a custom amount. The gift card is sent to the recipient, who can use the gift card code online or scan the barcode included in the email at your physical stores.
When customers redeem gift cards for online purchases, they must enter the gift card code at checkout. Once they have added items to their cart, they click Redeem your code located under their total.
This will open a text field where they can enter in the code from the email they received. It will also notify them if there is a remaining balance on their gift card.
Retail POS (R-Series) and eCom (E-Series) gift card sync FAQ

No. Existing gift cards in eCom (E-Series) must be managed in eCom and cannot be synced to Retail POS.

No. Discount and coupon codes will not apply to gift card sales. If there are multiple items in their cart along with a gift card, the code will apply to all other merchandise.

Yes. Your customers can choose one of the denominations you determine in your gift card settings, or choose their own within the minimum and maximum amounts you configure in your settings.

No. Only one gift card at a time can be used to pay for online purchases. There are no restrictions for how many gift cards can be redeemed in store.
