Next, you'll need to set up your cash drawer and receipt printer.
Whether you're using a computer or an iPad, your cash drawer is ready to use right from the box as it doesn't need to be directly connected to your device. In fact, the cash drawer is only connected to another piece of hardware (your receipt printer) if you want your cash drawer to open automatically when you complete a sale or click/tap Open drawer from within Lightspeed Retail. This is because the cash drawers we support have a printer-driven mechanism. Otherwise, simply use the available key to manually open or lock your cash drawer.
As for your receipt printer, the setup instructions involved do vary depending on the model and whether you're using a computer or an iPad.
To get started, click on the tab that matches your Lightspeed Retail setup (computer or iPad). From there, follow the setup instructions for your cash drawer and receipt printer model.
Setting up a cash drawer on your computer
If you want your cash drawer to open automatically when you complete a sale or click Open Drawer, you need to connect your cash drawer to your receipt printer with a cable. This way, the receipt printer can let the cash drawer know when its printing a receipt. This triggers your cash drawer to open as its mechanism is printer-driven.
As you're using a computer, you also need to configure some settings in your web browser. These web browser settings signal the receipt printer to print a sales receipt and to tell the cash drawer to open. These web browser settings are covered in the setup instructions of your receipt printer.
The supported cash drawers are the following:

Although the manufacturers and models are different, their setup instructions are almost identical. To connect your cash drawer:
- Remove the cash drawer from its packaging.
- If you have an APG cash drawer, connect the larger end of the RJ11-45 cable to the bottom of your cash drawer. The smaller end will connect to the cash drawer port at the back of your receipt printer. If you have Star Micronics cash drawer, connect either end of the RJ-45 cable to the back of your cash drawer and receipt printer.
- To configure your web browser settings, please see your receipt printer's setup instruction in the next section of this article.

Setting up a cash drawer on your iPad
If you want your cash drawer to open automatically when you complete a sale or tap Open drawer, you need to connect your cash drawer to your receipt printer with a cable. This way, the receipt printer can let the cash drawer know when its printing a receipt. This triggers your cash drawer to open as its mechanism is printer-driven.
As you're using an iPad, you also need to configure a setting in your Retail account that controls whether your receipt printer should print automatically after every sale. Additionally, you can also set your cash drawer to only open when a sale is paid for in cash if you prefer. These settings are covered in the setup instructions of your receipt printer.
